Nick Santonastasso: Choosing Strength Over Struggle
What I learn from Nick Santonastasso as a Ndis Support Worker
As an NDIS disability support worker for RVP Care Services, I had the opportunity to work alongside many individuals as they navigate some of life’s most challenging circumstances and develop resilience along the way. However, from time to time, a story emerges that truly reshapes your perspective. For me, that story was Nick Santonastasso’s.
I was introduced to Nick’s journey by Nadia De Silva, Director of RVP Care Services in Pakenham, who shared his experience with our team during a professional development session. His story was not only inspiring but also served as a meaningful reminder of our core purpose as support workers and the positive impact we strive to create.
About Nick, some people are born with challenges. Nick Santonastasso was born with what most of us would consider impossible odds. On May 20, 1996, doctors told his parents that he had a rare condition called Hanhart syndrome This is a disorder so rare that only a handful of people in the world live with it. He was born without legs, with one arm ending just below the shoulder, and only one finger on his other hand. The doctors gave him just a 30% chance of survival.
But instead of focusing on what Nick couldn’t do, his parents made a choice. They would raise him just like his siblings. No special treatment, no excuses, just love, support, and the belief that he could figure things out on his own. That belief shaped everything about who Nick would become.
Refusing to Be Limited
As a kid and teenager, Nick refused to let his condition put boundaries on his life. He played sports like baseball, football, and wrestling. He bowled on his high school team, went hunting and fishing, swam, scuba-dived, and even rode a bike. If there was something people said he couldn’t do, he would at least try.
On top of that, he became a star in the gaming world ranked third in the world for Gears of War. Later, he built a huge following on Vine, pulling off hilarious videos, including his unforgettable appearance as a zombie on The Walking Dead.
Nick was never content with just surviving. He wanted to live fully, push boundaries, and show others what’s possible.
From Survivor to Inspiration
Fast forward to today, and Nick has transformed his story into a global mission. He’s now a motivational speaker, fitness model, bodybuilder, and author of the book Victim to Victor. His goal is simple: to help people stop playing the victim in their own lives and start owning their power.
Nick’s message is clear and practical:
- Confidence doesn’t magically appear it comes from keeping the promises you make to yourself.
- Don’t waste energy on what you can’t control. Feel it, learn from it, then put your focus into solutions.
- Gratitude changes everything. When you focus on what you have and even what’s coming you draw better into your life.
- Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Who you spend time with will shape the person you become.
Every day, Nick practices what he preaches. He drinks a gallon of water, moves his body for at least 45 minutes, avoids his phone first thing in the morning, and uses visualization to stay aligned with his goals. It’s not about perfection, it’s about showing up for yourself, consistently.
What We Can Take from Nick’s Story
Nick’s life is a reminder that we don’t get to choose our circumstances, but we always get to choose our response. He could have lived angry at the world for the hand he was dealt. Instead, he chose strength, positivity, and purpose.
Even when tragedy struck like the loss of his brother to an overdose.Nick refused to let pain sink him. Instead, he used it as fuel to grow stronger, not just for himself but for others who needed hope.
His story teaches us a few powerful truths:
- Your adversity can be your greatest teacher.
- Confidence and self-worth come from action, not from waiting to “feel ready.”
- Gratitude and discipline create a foundation for happiness and success.
Nick Santonastasso proves that no matter where you start in life, you can rise above limitations, create meaning, and inspire others along the way. He doesn’t just tell us to be strong. He shows us what strength really looks like.
Nick’s story reminds us that disability does not define a person, their mindset does. In support work, the most meaningful achievements are often the small steps: asking for help, trying something new, or showing courage on a difficult day.
These moments happen every day in our sil homes and communities. At RVP Care Services, we are proud to support individuals through our Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes, where people are encouraged to live with dignity, confidence, and independence.
If you or a loved one are looking for a supportive and caring SIL home, we invite you to join us and be part of a community that truly believes in your potential.
